LPGA standouts could be coming to The Match for the first time in 2024.
Golfweek reported Friday that 11-time tour winner Lexi Thompson and rookie Rose Zhang are in talks to appear in the next made-for-TV event. The women wouldn’t go head-to-head in the match, but rather play as part of a mixed-team format.
Per Golfweek, Max Homa and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy could pair with Thompson or Zhang.
The first edition of The Match was played five years ago on Nov. 23, 2018, when Phil Mickelson beat Tiger Woods in a head-to-head contest in Las Vegas. There have been eight editions of The Match in all, and they have included stars in other sports.
Last June, Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce topped Golden State Warriors teammates Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
Lexi Thompson, 28, played on her sixth U.S. Solheim Cup team this summer before competing in the Shriners Children’s Open on the PGA Tour, narrowly missing the cut.
Zhang, 20, starred at Stanford before joining the LPGA Tour in May. She won her tour debut at the Mizuho Americas Open on June 1 and also competed for the United States in the Solheim Cup.
