The Ottawa Senators relieved general manager Pierre Dorion of his duties on Wednesday.
Owner Michael Andlauer announced during Wednesday’s conference that president of hockey operations Steve Staios will take over as the interim general manager. Staios was hired by the Senators Sept. 29.
The moves come hours after the NHL announced that the Senators will forfeit a first-round pick in one of the next three drafts for their role in the July 2021 trade of Evgenii Dadonov to Vegas and the subsequent, invalidated March 2022 trade involving the same player between the Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks.
Dorion, 51, succeeded Bryan Murray and was named the general manager of the Senators April 10, 2016. The Senators advanced to within one game of the Stanley Cup Final in 2017 before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final. Since then, Ottawa hasn’t qualified for the playoffs.
Dorion received a three-year contract extension in both 2018 and 2021 and was signed through the 2024-25 season.
Under his watch, the Senators posted a 225-261-59 record. They are off to a 4-4-0 start to this season.
