CONCACAF: Gold Cup roundup: Panama pummels Qatar behind Ismael Diaz’s hat trick

Ismael Diaz tallied three second-half goals to power Panama to a 4-0 win over Qatar in the quarterfinals of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

Panama held a 1-0 lead at intermission on a tally from Edgar Barcenas in the 19th minute.

Diaz then tallied in the 56th, 63rd and 65th minutes to put an emphatic end to the affair.

Panama put six shots on goal among its 17 total. Qatar managed one shot on goal for the match.

Panama held possession for 62 percent of the contest.

Panama won Group C with a 2-0-1 mark, earning seven points. Qatar finished tied for second in Group B with a 1-1-1 mark.

Mexico 2, Costa Rica 0

Two second-half goals were the difference as Mexico shut out Costa Rica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals in Arlington, Texas.

Mexico will face either Guatemala or Jamaica on Wednesday in Las Vegas in the semifinals. The winner plays in the final on July 16 in Inglewood, Calif.

Orberlin Pineda coverted a penalty with a right-footed shot to the center of the goal in the 52nd minute for the match’s first tally. Erick Sanchez, who had entered the match in the 84th minute, was in the center of the box and used his left foot to direct the ball to the top left corner. Roberto Alvarado collected the assist in the 87th minute.

While Mexico had a slight advantage in possession at 51 percent, it fired 14 shots on goal, to nine for Costa Rica. Mexico was more on frame, 8-1.

Costa Rica goalkeeper Kevin Chamorro made five saves, to one for Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa.
