Former heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder was arrested early Tuesday morning in Los Angeles on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon.

The arrest was made following a traffic stop in Hollywood. According to multiple media reports, police pulled over Wilder’s Rolls-Royce for having illegally tinted windows and an obscured license plate.

The officers searched the car after their smelled marijuana, the Los Angeles Times reported. That led to the discovery of a 9-millimeter handgun.

Wilder, 37, was booked and soon released when he posted $35,000 bail, per the Times. The newspaper reported that no official charges were filed.

Wilder subsequently posted on Twitter, “I’d rather be safe than sorry. The End”

A bronze medalist in the heavyweight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Wilder owns a 43-2-1 record as a pro. He won the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship in 2015, then successfully defending the belt 10 times before losing to Tyson Fury in 2020.

Fury beat Wilder again in 2021. Wilder won his most recent fight in October 2022 against Robert Helenius.
