WTA: Martina Navratilova: ‘As far as they know, I’m cancer-free’

Martina Navratilova is cancer-free nearly four months after declaring she had been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer.

“As far as they know, I’m cancer-free,” she told broadcaster Piers Morgan in a TalkTV interview scheduled to air on Tuesday. “I still need to do the right breast probably with radiation but only for a couple of weeks and that’s more preventative than anything else.”

Navratilova, 66, received the Stage 1 diagnosis in November.

“I was in a total panic for three days thinking I may not see next Christmas,” she said in the interview. “The bucket list came into my mind of all the things I wanted to do. And this may sound really shallow, but I was like, ‘OK, which kick-ass car do I really want to drive if I live like a year?'”

Navratilova is in her second bout with cancer. She successfully beat the disease in 2010.

Navratilova has nine Wimbledon singles championships to her name. Her 18 Grand Slam titles overall ties her with Chris Evert for the third-most championships in the Open era, behind Serena Williams (23) and Steffi Graf (22).
