Syracuse promoted Gerry McNamara to associate head coach on Wednesday.

McNamara, an assistant coach with the Orange since 2011-12, fills the opening left by Adrian Autry when he was promoted to replace Jim Boeheim last week as head coach.

McNamara, 39, was a 2,000-point scorer in his four-year career at Syracuse, averaging 15.5 points and 4.8 assists per game in 135 starts. McNamara helped lead Syracuse to a national championship in the 2002-03 season, his freshman campaign.

Syracuse retired McNamara’s No. 3 earlier this month.

“I appreciate the chance to continue to coach at Syracuse University and help Coach Autry build on the program’s history of success,” McNamara said. “The community has meant the world to my family and I over the years. I know as a staff we are eager to hit the ground running and get right to work.”
