The Philadelphia Union acquired midfielder Joaquin Torres from CF Montreal in exchange for $500,000 in general allocation money on Thursday.

Montreal will receive $250,000 in 2023 and the other half in 2024. Additionally, Montreal could get up to $300,000 more if Torres meets specified performance conditions.

Torres, a 25-year-old Argentina native, will occupy an international roster spot.

“Joaquin offers a new dimension to our attack with his ball progression skills and aggressive, forward-moving mindset,” said Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a news release. “He excels at creating opportunities as well as finishing, and his dynamic, proactive movements are exactly what we were looking to add to our attack.”

Torres played on loan with CF Montreal in the 2021 season, then was made a permanent transfer from Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina before the 2022 season. Torres made his MLS debut with Montreal on May 8, 2021, and in his time with the club made 55 appearances (37 starts), with seven goals and 12 assists.
