Makai Ashton-Langford scored a game-high 21 points and had seven rebounds as Boston College upset No. 21 Virginia Tech 70-65 in overtime Wednesday in the Eagles’ ACC home opener in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Ashton-Langford had 18 points in regulation and made a 3-pointer that gave Boston College a 66-61 advantage with 36 seconds left in overtime. Devin McGlockton added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles (7-6, 1-1 ACC).

Justyn Mutts and Sean Pedulla each scored a team-high 18 points for Virginia Tech, which committed 15 turnovers. Boston College scored 15 points off those turnovers and held a 30-1 edge in bench points.

The Hokies’ Hunter Cattoor (five points) injured his left hand late in the second half and didn’t return.

The Eagles led 7-48 following a McGlockton basket with 4:19 to play, but the Hokies (11-2, 1-1 ACC) scored the next 11 points to take a 59-57 lead with 49 seconds remaining. Ashton-Langford tied the game 59-59 on a layup with 32 seconds left, and the game went to overtime after the Hokies missed two shots on their final possession.

Virginia Tech is 0-4 against Boston College since Mike Young became head coach in 2019.

The Eagles entered the game ranked 14th among the 15 ACC teams in scoring offense (63.8 ppg), 14th in field goal percentage (41.4 percent) and last in 3-point percentage (27.6 percent).

Boston College led 10-8 after Ashton-Langford made a layup with 12:57 remaining, but the visitors scored the next 10 points to take an 18-10 lead. The Eagles’ scoring drought lasted 6:40 as they shot 0 for 12 from the field during that stretch.

The Eagles are 3-13 in their last 16 games against ranked teams. Wednesday was the first time they defeated a ranked opponent since 2020, when they earned a 60-53 home victory against Virginia.
