Canadian Mike Weir was named the captain of the International team for the 2024 Presidents Cup on Wednesday.

It is the first captaincy for the former Masters champion. Weir is a five-time Presidents Cup participant and three-time captain’s assistant at the biennial competition.

The International squad has lost nine consecutive Presidents Cups to the United States heading into the event set for Sept. 24-29, 2024, at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada.

“Presidents Cup has become such a big part of my career, so to be here in this moment announced as captain of the 2024 International Team is surreal,” Weir said in a news release. “… I couldn’t be more excited to lead the International Team into my home country of Canada for what will surely be the experience of a lifetime.”

Weir, 52, was an assistant under Trevor Immelman for the 17.5-12.5 loss to the U.S. at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., in September. He was also an assistant for captain Ernie Els in 2019 and for Nick Price in 2017.

He became the first Canadian ever to play in the Presidents Cup in 2000 and compiled a 13-9-2 record in the event, also participating in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

The left-handed Weir won at Augusta in 2003 and spent more than 100 weeks ranked in the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking from 2001-05. He won eight times on the PGA Tour and earned his first title on the Champions Tour in 2021.

The U.S. team has not yet named a captain for 2024.
