The Phoenix Suns confirmed Sunday that starting forward Cameron Johnson has a torn meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery.

The Suns didn’t have an immediate timetable for how long Johnson will be sidelined.

Johnson, an NBA Sixth Man of the Year finalist last season, injured the knee during the first quarter of Friday’s 108-106 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

He grabbed at the knee multiple times during the quarter and later was noticeably limping after trying to fight through a screen. He left the contest with 6:46 left in the period.

The Athletic reported Saturday that Johnson tore the meniscus.

The 26-year-old Johnson has a 13.0 scoring average in his first season as a starter. He is in the final season of his four-year rookie contract.

Johnson’s promotion to a starting role prior to training camp led to an impasse between former starter Jae Crowder and the Suns. The sides mutually agreed that Phoenix would trade Crowder but no deal has been consummated.
