The North Carolina Courage acquired forward Tyler Lussi from Angel City FC in exchange for defender Merritt Mathias.

Both NWSL teams announced the trade on Friday.

Lussi, 27, appeared in 20 matches (16 starts) in her lone season with Angel City in 2022. She had five goals and four assists in 42 games with the Portland Thorns before being traded to ACFC in December 2021.

“Angel City is grateful to Tyler for being an integral part of our inaugural season,” said Angel City general manager Angela Hucles Mangano. “Merritt is an exceptional player, who will bring leadership on and off the field as well as a wealth of professional experience as we head into our second season.”

Mathias, 32, has 10 goals and 19 assists in 203 career games with FC Kansas City (2013-14), Seattle Reign FC (2015-17) and the Courage (2018-22).

“We cannot thank Merritt enough for all she did here with our club,” Courage head coach Sean Nahas said. “She had an immediate impact upon arriving in 2018 where she helped us achieve great success over the years and will always hold a special place here in NC. As she moves on to ACFC we wish her the best of luck and know she will go and have an impact for them just as much as she did here for us.”
