MLB: Ump Nate Tomlinson out after getting hit with broken bat

Umpire Nate Tomlinson was given the night off Wednesday, one day after he was hit in the face by a broken bat.

Tomlinson was behind the plate during Tuesday’s game between the Los Angeles Angels and host Los Angeles Dodgers. In the ninth inning, the Angels’ Mike Trout made contact on a pitch while cracking his bat, with the barrel end detaching and hitting Tomlinson in the face mask.

Tomlinson went to the ground immediately and was bleeding from his nose while being tended to by the Dodgers’ training staff. He left the game, with crew chief Laz Diaz moving from second base to behind the plate for the final two outs after a nine-minute delay.

Tomlinson was replaced for Wednesday’s Angels-Dodgers game by call-up umpire Alex MacKay.
