In the Pacific Northwest, a third unsolved stabbing that had unsettling similarities to the unsolved killings of the four University of Idaho students has reappeared as investigators forgo Thanksgiving festivities to continue their hunt for a suspect. At a news conference on Wednesday, journalists questioned Moscow police about a potential link between the student killings and a second unsolved stabbing that claimed the life of Travis Juetten and critically injured his wife Jamilyn in Oregon. Authorities claim that on August 13, 2021, at about three in the morning, a burglar attacked the couple as they slept.

26-year-old Travis Juetten resisted, but he eventually died from his wounds. His wife, now 26 years old, managed to survive 19 stabbings. The Idaho Tribune reported the next morning that a third neighboring attack had a similar profile.

According to Oregon Crime Stoppers, 71-year-old Sandra Ladd, a Washougal woman was found stabbed to death in her Washougal, Washington, home on June 14, 2020. The medical examiner discovered multiple stab wounds in her torso, leading Washougal police to declare her death a homicide at the time.

The two incidents took place 70 miles apart but 14 months apart. From Moscow, Idaho, the locations are about a five-hour trip west. Police said that on November 13, 2022, between 3 and 4 a.m., three University of Idaho students—Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21—were fatally stabbed while they slept in a rental home nearby.

The incident took place on the 13th of the month between 3 and 4 a.m., the same as the assault on the Juettens. It was not immediately obvious how or when Ladd passed away. The Oregonian stated that her body was found in her bed around 4:30 p.m. There is no known suspect in any of the three cases. The Idaho State Police’s director of communications, Aaron Snell, said on Thursday that the cases’ potential connections would be thoroughly investigated.

He added that they will research the likelihood that they are connected. According to him, it was too soon to determine for sure whether any of the three incidents were connected, he added, adding that investigators had “not ruled out any thought or concept.”

Moscow police have stated that they think the student killings were “targeted,” but they have opted not to go into any detail. Investigators are requesting any witnesses who may have surveillance footage of the scene to submit it because no murder weapon has been found. Additionally, they were investigating rumors that Goncalves had been stalked before the attack.
