Elon Musk Plans Video Chat, Encrypted DM and Voice Call Features for ‘Twitter 2.0’, Reports Say
Elon Musk is said to have enormous ambitions for Twitter, including video chats, voice conversations, and encrypted direct messages. According to a leaked recording of an all-hands meeting, Elon Musk reportedly told Twitter employees on Monday that he wants to add video and phone call features, as well as encrypted direct messaging, to the social media site.
Musk gave a presentation dubbed “Twitter 2.0” at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco. He first used the term last Wednesday, when he sent an email to employees demanding that they work “extremely hardcore” or face being laid off.
The Tesla CEO stated that he had met with Moxie Marlinspike, the founder of Signal and a former Twitter employee, who is potentially willing to help out with the encryption. Musk added that they wanted people to be able to interact without worrying about their privacy, referring to potential data breaches that could reveal messages. The Verge got the recording, which reveals some of Musk’s ambitions for updating Twitter, including secure communication.
DMs would be encrypted, which means the text could only be viewed by participants, as is the case on platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. In August, an ex-employee was found guilty of spying after passing on Twitter users’ information to Saudi Arabia for a fee of more than $300,000. He also stated that he would like to provide voice and video chat through DMs, a function that is already available on Facebook and WhatsApp.
The billionaire explained how Twitter may allow for encrypted calls without requiring your phone number, as Signal does. In the tech world, replacing phone numbers with more identifiable account usernames is a common proposal. Last week, Musk echoed Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s enthusiasm for the idea. It is unclear whether the encrypted calls and chats would be available to all users or only those who subscribe to Twitter Blue for $8 per month. The proposed features could potentially be related to Musk’s concept of “creating X, the everything app.” The world’s wealthiest individual purchased the domain name “X.com” over five years ago and has spoken of developing a “super-app” similar to China’s WeChat.
