Following Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, yet another well-known person has declared their intention to leave the social networking site. Many users, including Whoopi Goldberg and Ryan Reynolds, said they would be leaving the website just days after the company’s new CEO took over. Captain Sully, a valiant airline pilot whose full name is Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III, has just joined the list.

The heroic actions of the retired US fighter pilot, ambassador, and airline pilot are best remembered for his 2009 Hudson River ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 after a bird strike rendered both engines inoperable. The 155 passengers on board all lived. The 71-year-old, who gained notoriety for his amazing landing of a jet with two malfunctioning engines, saving the lives of all 155 people on board, recently stated in a tweet: “To my friends on Twitter, I will be taking a step back from the platform for now.

His departure follows Musk’s decision to add a number of new features to the social networking app, such as the choice for users to pay an $8 monthly fee for a Twitter Blue subscription, which would enable them to buy the coveted blue checkmark. All of this was done to support Musk’s objective to do rid of phoney accounts and automated programmes, but introducing Twitter Blue has utterly backfired. A number of users paid for the membership to receive the blue tick before setting up phoney accounts to tweet silly things while posing as well-known firms.

Aside from Captain Sully, other celebrities leaving Twitter have included Whoopi Goldberg, Toni Braxton, and Ryan Reynolds. Gigi Hadid, Toni Braxton, Sara Bareilles, and Bridgerton producer Shonda Rhimes. Others include Ken Olin, Brian Koppelman, Téa Leoni, Marina Sirtis, Rob Reiner, Alex Winter, Erik Larsen, and Jameela Jamil. Shaun King and Amy Siskind, two authors and campaigners, have also threatened to boycott the site.

As Musk backtracks on his Twitter Blue subscriptions, people are now left wondering what the coming weeks and months will unveil.
