Wealthy nations have been facing criticism that they have not done their bit to vaccinate poorer nations around the world, who vaccines rates are extremely low with Africa at less than 3.5 percent. Although they deny this, both the U.S. and the EU, who have already vaccinated large or very large swaths of their population have decided to ramp up their efforts, Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the American President addressed a virtual summit on coronavirus vaccines with participation from Canada, the U.K., the U.K., UN leaders and the WHO. Biden said that the U.S. was leading the world in vaccine donations and as they did so, they needed other high-income countries to deliver vaccine donations and pledges.

He also said that they were launching the EU -U.S. vaccine partnership whereby they would work more closely together and expand global vaccinations.

He announced additional purchase of Pfizer vaccines amounting to half a billion dollars making its total commitment on vaccines for distributing to more than 1.1 billion doses. He also said that the nation had shipped more than 160 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to other countries that included 130 million from its own supply of vaccines.

He also said that the U.S. had committed three shots to the rest of the world for every shot administered to date, in America. The EU said that it would donate 500 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Biden said that $370 million will also be given for administration and delivery of vaccines and over $380 million will be given to the COVAX vaccination project. The Biden administration has invested over $15 billion in its global response to COVID-19, up to the present.
